Back when I was selling financial services, the firm I was representing had a CEO for a few years who was extremely passionate about raising the bar and separating yourself from the masses by creating a “Value Gap”.

A concept I picked up on instantly.

Basically what that meant was, I knew more about financial planning, investing, insurance, etc…. than the people I sat down with.

And I had the tools to help them accomplish their financial objectives FASTER than they would on their own.

So as a result I should get paid for that knowledge.

This CEO (Joe) would hold both of his hands out, with one raised really high and the other one really low.

One hand represented my knowledge about it and the other my prospects.

The gap in the middle represented the difference in the knowledge, the VALUE I brought to the table.

The bigger the VALUE GAP, the more I should get paid.

This concept of VALUE GAP thinking, stuck with me all these years.

Tom Hopkins, the greatest sales trainer in the world and my first mentor has a saying…

…”the amount of money you make, is in direct proportion to the number of people you serve…”

And I truly believe the amount of money you make, is also based on the VALUE you bring to the marketplace.

Everyone wants to know HOW to make more money, yet most people don’t stop and ask, where are the opportunities to make money right now?

What is it that others would be willing to pay for, and do it GLADLY?

Want to know a very large, very rabid group of people, with m.oney that will pull out their checkbooks and literally THROW money at you?

How about businesses?

MORE CUSTOMERS!!!

Nothing is more important to a business owner than getting more paying customers.

And it doesn’t matter what type of a business this is.

A bar, a restaurant, any retail shop, doctor, dentist, chiropractor, etc… you name it, if they sell a product or a service (and every business does), than they’re ALWAYS looking for more ways to get more people through the door.

Does that make sense?

Ok, so what does this have to do with you?

Well, the problem with MOST local businesses is these business owners know ONE thing. They know how to operate their business, but sadly most know very little if anything about marketing.

Taking out a yellow page ad, setting a website with the menu of the restaurant, and Facebook Fan Page where they post a coupon once in awhile is NOT marketing.

Yet this is EXACTLY what almost 100% of businesses do, and they thing they’re developing their online presence.

What could these businesses do differently to generate MORE business.

How about run an ad on Facebook, Google, or Bing?

How about setting up an autoresponder with an opt-in list, and offer their visitors something of value (i.e. a coupon, a special offer, or even a report with some valuable information)?

How about creating a blog and put out regular useful content to get people to want to absorb more of what they have?

How about doing some very basic SEO to show up on page 1 for the most obvious keywords?

How about creating a nice video for their site, their Facebook page, and showcase their product, service, or whatever they have with a direct call to action to either call, stop by or go to their site to do business?

How many local businesses are doing this?

NONE.

A few may be doing 1 or 2 of these, maybe.

And guess who’s got the goodies?

You do.

Look, I don’t care whether you’ve had any success online or not, but if you’ve been at it for a little while and know how to do any of those things, than YOU ARE THE EXPERT.

You’re the one that can help them and get paid for it.

And I’m not talking about a couple hundred dollars. I’m talking $1,000 or $2,0000 or more per client with potential for a monthly residual to continue servicing them.

I just remembered something which seems funny now.

A number of years ago, actually, it was 2003 b.c. (before I jumped on the computer to make money), I was still working in the financial services business, and I had new agent I recruited, Robert.

Robert was a very technical guy, all into computers, and he’s been sending me emails to let me know his progress in getting his license, what he was doing, etc…

And I wasn’t checking them that often, as a matter of fact, I wasn’t using it much at all.

One day he asked, you don’t do email very much do you?

And with a smirk on my face, I said, “no I don’t do email”, we’ve got a phone we can use. If I need to let you know something, I’ll call you, email is good for sending pictures and documents…”

Yep, I’m eating my own words… but gimme a break, at one point people thought the World was flat.

Little did I know how email would change the way we communicate and stay in touch.

Yeah I know Facebook is here, but I’m not big on that, or Skype for that matter, I still prefer email, but the point is technology has creeped into our lives and changed the way we communicate.

Funny how now I completely rely on email to stay in touch with thousands of people.

I even get paid by others to write emails, and to think at one point I actually had the words – “I don’t do email” – come out of my mouth.

And what’s really sad, is I didn’t jump on that bandwagon until a couple of years later. I think that cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars by NOT RECOGNIZING the HUGE opportunity of email marketing back and the whole online marketing thing in the early 2000′s.

Who knows, it probably cost me more than that, 7 figures I think, because it was completely ground floor.

The point is, a few years from now you can be looking back and saying to yourself, “what was I thinking”, “if I only would have known, I would have made so much money…”.

Well I’m here to tell you that the internet, email, social media, etc…. although NOT it’s infancy stage anymore, but will continue to evolve and become more and more part of our lives.

And those who embrace it will ride that wave all the way to the BANK.

MLM a subject close to my heart.

I get questions frequently about MLM/Network Marketing, is it good, bad, worth it, etc…?

So I’m gonna lay it all out for you, from my perspective.

I will preface it by saying that I’m not knocking the entire MLM industry, and as a matter of fact, I owe a lot of my success to it.

In case you don’t know I was involved very seriously in a network marketing business in the financial services industry for 11 years, of which for almost 8 I made a full-time living. And was actually successful with it. I made money, got all kinds of awards, won trips to the most luxurious resorts in exotic places like Hawaii, Florida, Vegas, etc…

Now I’m not gonna get in to the details of that particular company in this post, that’s not important here. Although I did publish an article about on EzineArticles with more details, and there’s a link to it from the About Me page.

But what I do want to tell you is that as an idea the whole override structure of traditional MLM businesses is brilliant.

I mean people who call it pyramid schemes, are really idiots in my opinion, or at least ignorant of the fact that EVERY sales organization works off of overrides of their sales people.

Realtors, mortgage brokers, insurance agencies, car dealerships, retail store managers, EVERYONE who does ANY KIND OF SELLING where commissions are involved, there’s an override element of some sort.

Many moons ago when I worked in the carpet business, the company had many stores throughout the Mid-west. Clyde’s the division that I worked at, had 13 stores.

Each store had sales people who got commissions.

Then there were assistant managers, who got commissions on their sales, plus a .5% override (or something like that) of all the entire store sales.

Then there were store managers who got a little bigger override from the store.

Then there was Tom, who was a supervisor when I was there. I personally couldn’t stand the guy, he’d walk into the store and start yelling at you for no reason (great way to motivate people), but that’s another story for another time. Tom got a % of the sales of the entire chain of 13 stores.

Now how is that not a pyramid?

The point is that overrides are a natural part of every sales business.

And in a MLM/Network Marketing business, everyone gets a chance to move up and get overrides by building their own sales force, which is really brilliant and a great chance to build massive wealth.

NOW, back to the question, is MLM good?

Yes, IF you focus on the right things.

Here’s the deal.

Most MLM companies do a very good job of feeding you with good “mental nutrition”, books, audios, seminars, retreats, etc… to help you develop a positive attitude, leadership skills, re-wire your thinking to be success driven, teach you goal setting, provide a positive environment which encourages growth and the entrepreneurial spirit.

And all those things are wonderful and are CRITICAL to your success in any entrepreneurial endeavor in and outside of the scope of the MLM. So if you think for a minute reading Think and Grow Rich and listening to audios isn’t necessary, you’re WRONG, sorry. These things are a must.

However, none of these things will make you money in that business.

Yes you need them to develop the “Right Mindset”, but it still all boils down to your ability to recruit, train and develop PRODUCERS, who will SELL and you can get paid overrides.

You don’t make money until the sale is made.

Now some companies pay you for people signing up, without them actually buying anything, and I’m totally against that. You should ONLY get paid when a sale is made to an end-user (customer), who buys some kind of a product or a service which they will use, then and only then it’s considered Kosher in my book.

So there lies the 1st problem with a lot of MLM companies, who pay you “bonuses” for signing people up. That’s ridiculous, and I’m totally against that.

But that’s not even the main issue in my opinion. Whether a company does that or not, it’s not what I would consider the #1 problem with traditional MLM.

Here is what is.

Most companies don’t teach you HOW to find people.

What’s even worst, as it was in my case, is they preach that “you’re only one recruit away from explosion”. Meaning it’s your recruits and downlines who’ll do the prospecting for you.

Well, let me tell you something.

The fact is, most people you’ll recruit will NEVER do anything. As a matter of fact, most people who you recruit who will do something, show up to meetings, even go and try to recruit others, and show commitment, and even go as far as quit their job…

… WILL NOT DO MUCH, because eventually the toughness of the fact that most people quit, will get to them.

The truth is you’ve got to be one tough cookie to make it. Now you have to be like that in any business, BUT in MLM you’re sacrificing a lot of time, doing a lot of hand holding, building relationships, spending time away from your family, because you’re “building a business” and it’ll be worth it in the end… and you have to constantly be telling your people they’ll make it, it’ll be worth it – EVEN when you know in your heart of hearts they’ll never make it, ’cause they just ain’t cut out for this business.

So unless you have a REAL system to get in front of a lot of people (or get your message in front of lots of people), you’ll NEVER make it in this business.

It’s a numbers business, right?

Let me put it to you this way.

I once listened to an interview between 2 very successful, very wealthy guys in my former business. These would be 2 of the 5 people who I admired the most and considered my mentors, and respect them a lot.

Here’s what one of them said.

“Let’s face it, you and I both get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a month (that’s a month not a year), off of the blood, tears, and sacrifice of tens of thousands of people who are struggling now and paying the price”

And the problem I find with it is these people aren’t equipped with the tools to go out and find lots of quality people.

Prospecting and appointment setting scripts to get on the phone and pound away is the way of the 70′s and 80′s, and maybe 90′s.

But not now.

And guys, THIS IS the reality of this business.

If you’ve been drinking the “coolaid” of a MLM business, and I say that in a positive manner, because I have to for many years, I urge to step back and look at things objectively.

Now here’s why I’m so damn excited about doing it all online.

You can still make a ton of money selling, and you don’t have to do it personally, your marketing and websites do it.

You can make money promoting products and services people want to buy and get value from. You can sell your own or others’ products as an affiliate.

You can recruit and build a downline, as long as you’ve got your marketing down.

You can and should build a list and using the greatest thing since sliced bread, called auto-responder, you can multiply your message 100, 1000, 10,000 or more times depending on the size of your list, and you income IS NOT dependent on the blood, sweat, tears, and struggle of tens of thousands of others.

When I realized this in September 2005, when I bought a set of DVD’s about internet marketing, my life changed. I got excited about the fact that I don’t have to do all that anymore and I started my online biz. 5 months later I left that company, still held on to my financial licenses with another firm and did it on the side, while continuing to build my online business.

Over the next 3 years I completely let go of my financial business, doing exactly what I just described.

This is why consider online marketing to be the greatest opportunity, but you have to focus on the right things.

I just paid a guy a couple of hundred bucks to pull out the weeds from my landscaping, which were really overgrown.

This is hard work. In the sun, it took him 7 hours to do, without any breaks.

Now online you can make hundreds of dollars a day without breaking breaking your back in in the hot sun…

… BUT it ain’t easy.

You have to put time and effort into learning the craft.

You need to acquire “specialized knowledge” to be able to offer something others can pay you a lot of money for.

Simple? Yes.

Easy? No.

But very doable.

So when you hear EASY in all these BS online scammy products, don’t walk, but RUN the other way.

#2 Internet Marketing Myth That Keeps You Broke:

It’s fast.

Another hypey claim the so-called gurus want you to believe.

How many products have you seen that claim you’ll be making money in 24 hours or 48 hours or some’ like that?

Lots, right. So how’s that going?

No, you need a little more than a day to start making money.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve bought products before, where I was able to make money the same day…

… BUT that’s because I had a couple of years of experience at the time.

It’s like the guy who was an overnight success, after 10 years of doing it.

So then how long does it take to make money in this biz?

You want the truth?

It depends.

It depends on your drive, desire, and motivation.

It depends on how much mental baggage you got that you HAVE to get rid off before you can start seeing success.

Yes, there’s stuff in your subconscious mind that’s keeping you stuck where you are, and until you can get rid of it, you’ll stay stuck.

It depends on how quickly you take action on the knowledge you get.

There’s a learning curve to this business, and you need to give yourself a good 60 to 90 days to absorb the information, put it to use, and expect that you’re in school for the next 3 months.

Doesn’t mean you won’t make dime ’till then.

I was making money pretty quickly when I first started, but you need to have the mindset that you’re in it for the long run and not be disappointed if you don’t make money your first week.

#3 Internet Marketing Myth That Keeps You Broke:

It’s fail-proof or guaranteed.

Another BS claim.

Now this is a BIGGIE.

Nothing is guaranteed.

This is a business, and in business things happen out that are out of our control.

If you’re looking for a guaranteed way to make money, there aren’t any.

As a matter of fact, I can guarantee you will fall flat on your face more than once in your journey to creating the kind of life you’re dreaming of.

You need to learn to quickly bounce back up from setbacks.

So many people buy programs, try it, and then after the first attempt, they say, “I’m losing motivation, because I don’t see results yet.”

If this is you, then I’m sorry,but you’d better get back to your job and forget about becoming an entrepreneur.

You need to develop the mental toughness to overcome challenges and disappointments and keep moving forward.

#4 Internet Marketing Myth That Keeps You Broke:

It’s push button, and you don’t need to know PPC, SEO, Article Marketing, Blogging, or any other traffic generation methods.

Oh and you don’t need to have a website.

Hmmm, really?

Then how the heck are people going to find your site or whatever you’re promoting?

I mean people do have to find your what you’re offering, right?

And you either have to rank for it on Google (for which you do need your own site)…

… OR you have to buy traffic from Google, Yahoo, or other search engines, websites, or networks.

Sorry there’s no other way around it.

And as far as not having your own site.

You can get away without a website for while, but you can’t really build a sustainable business without one.

9 out of 10 times you’re better with your own site even if you’re promoting an affiliate product, for a variety of reasons.

But this is beyond the scope of this post, so I’ll just leave it at that.

If you want to make money online, you need your own website.

The good news, it’s very easy (yeah I know I used that word) to do, with push button blog creation software most hosting accounts have.

And you can get a hosting account for less than $10 a month, so it’s really not a big deal to get your own site.

#5 Internet Marketing Myth That Keeps You Broke:

You don’t have to sell anything.

Now that’s just crossing line.

How in the world are you going to make ANY money if no one buys anything?

What, does the money somehow magically falls out of the sky and lands in your account because you bought an ebook that tells you so?

Now you know better than that.

Some kind of a transaction has to be made in order for anyone to make any money online.

It’s true that some affiliate programs (CPA) will actually pay you for leads, without these people actually buying anything.

But that’s because they left their information for the advertiser, so they pay you for those leads, because these companies make their money on the back end.

But you better believe they’re selling some’ to these people, otherwise how could they pay you?

So as I wrap up my little rant on the 5 stupid internet marketing myths that keep you broke, I do want to end it on a positive note.

The reality is this business is not easy, but very doable.

With the right knowledge and understanding of how to find markets, how to get traffic to your site(s), and how to advertise it in a way that’ll entice these people to buy you can build a heck of a business.

I don’t think it’s hard, but you have to put time and effort into it and give it a little bit of time to produce the results you want.

As for the technical stuff, like building a site, and things like that…

… fortunately, you can outsource the whole thing and pay others literally a couple of dollars an hour.

Back in September of 2005, I bought a set of dvd’s about making m.oney online.

I stayed up late into the night watching story after story of ordinary people making a six and some a seven figure income online.

That’s when I first caught the internet marketing bug.

In the last 6 years, the landscape of this business has changed… A LOT.

Back then you could go sign up as an affiliate for any product, create an ad on Google, and be up and running in 15 minutes.

And with click prices even in competitive markets being as low as 10 to 20 cents, you could make a lot of money very, very quickly.

I just had to write this email today.

2 weeks ago I bought a program for $997.

Yes, I also buy stuff if I think it can help me in my business.

I fully subscribe to Ben Franklin’s advice, who said…

“Empty the coins in your purse into your mind and your mind will fill your purse with coins.”

I find this to be very true and have no problem investing regularly in myself and my education.

In any case back to this product.

I’m not going to name the product or the guru behind it, but lets just say that he’s highly recommended by several gurus, as the go to guy.

After spending a few hours in the members area going through the videos on buying traffic, I was first disappointed, and then pissed off.

Disappointed because I was waiting for some new twist on how to get cheap targeted traffic.

Instead I found lots of short 5 to 15 minute videos covering the very basics of the different networks there are.

If you’re brand new, at first sight it may seem like a good course, but as I looked deeper into the content…
